Common Electrical Problems and What to Do

Electrical problems can be inconvenient, but knowing what to do when you experience one helps you act quickly and get the necessary professional electrical services.

Know what’s causing common electrical problems at home and get the right troubleshooting tips to keep your family safe.

1. Flickering Lights

If your lights dim or flicker, the issue may be the lightbulb or light fixture. A problem with your home’s wiring, like damaged or loose connections leading to the fixture, could be another cause. Flickering lights can also be a power surge, where the electricity demand on your system is too high.

What to do: First, change the lightbulb. If this doesn’t work, it’s best to get a professional to upgrade your wiring system.

2. Malfunctioning Switches

A faulty switch that works intermittently or feels warm to the touch indicates a potentially bigger issue. There may be loose wiring, a crack inside the device or faulty wiring in your home.

What to do: Don’t use the switch. Once you stop using it, call a certified electrician.

3. Burning Smells

If an outlet or switch smells like it’s burning, the electrical system may be overloaded, or there may be a fault with your home’s wiring.

What to do: A burning smell may lead to an electrical fire, so turn the power off at the circuit breaker and call a professional electrician right away.

4. Buzzing Noise

Fluorescent light fixtures and dimmer switches often produce a buzzing sound. However, other switches, outlets and appliances shouldn’t buzz. If this happens, there could be an issue with an electrical component, or the wiring may be loose. An overloaded circuit can also cause buzzing noises.

What to do: As with all electrical issues, troubleshooting home electrical problems starts with switching the appliance off and unplugging it before calling a professional.

5. Circuit Breaker Issues

A circuit breaker is designed to switch off when it’s overloaded. Tripping prevents the system from overheating, preventing electrical fires.

What to do: Occasional tripping is normal, but when it happens frequently, the circuit could be outdated and needs expert repair or an upgrade.
